Havana, Aug 1 – Prestigious Cuban musicians like Pablo Milanés and Elena Burke Grez professionally grew under the tutelage of master Luis Carbonell, who turns 90 this year with a fresh and lucid soul o fan artist.
In exclusive statements for Prensa Latina, Carbonell revealed his vocation for teaching, although he has enjoyed very much each part of the career he began when still an adolescent.
At the height of my 90th birthday, on July 26, I see life with great optimism: as there is less time, but I have the same aspirations of doing something new for youth and culture.
By the force and emotion of his spoken poems, his public baptized Carbonell as the painter of Antilles’ and several big figures of Cuban literature composed specifically for him.
He also helped to form the musical repertoire of consecrated figures like Esther Borja and Rita Montaner, and he still tutors cabaret Tropicana in the design of its shows.
To this giant of the oral expression and lover of music, will be performed a gala homage next August 6, at the Mella Theater in this capital for his 90th birthday and 75 years of artistic life.
Pablo Milanés, Farah María, Marta Campos, Milada Milhet, the Scholla Cantorum Coralina and the quintet Vocal Retro are included in the program, under the direction of Raúl de la Rosa, together with humorists Carlos Ruiz de la Tejera, Ulises Toirac and Marcos García.
