Havana, Sep 27 – The Voces Populares (“Popular Voices”) Conference will be held in the Cuban capital Nov. 2-9 with the goal of enhancing the musical diversity of every nation, Cuban singer Argelia Fragoso, organizer of the event, announced today.
As part of that event, Mexican singer Lila Downs will give a concert at the Sala Covarrubias of the National Theater in Havana on Nov. 9, featuring songs from her latest CD, “Milagros y Pecados”, which won a Grammy in 2012.
On Nov. 10, that stage will also host Dominican Maridalia Hernandez, one of the founding singers of the celebrated Juan Luis Guerra’s band, 440.
A German band, Fun Fun, which performs traditional African and Caribbean genres, will participate in an encounter of singers and percussionists.
In addition to performances, the “Popular Voices” conference also includes lectures, debates and workshops, including master’s classes for voice, guitar and piano accompanist.
Fragoso and the maestro Luis Carbonell, a beloved figure of Cuban music, will give the master’s class “Voice, Performance, and Cuban Traditions,” and other calsses are to be taught by Spanish guitarist Juan Martinez, Cuban music arranger Reinaldo Montesinos, and pianist Roberto Gonzalez.
