Havana, Oct 4 – The skillfulness of Paco de Lucia’s hands made headlines in Cuba today after an outstanding concert, where this master of Spanish guitar beautifully performed a variety of rhythms and styles. Lucia, the most prestigious flamenco guitarist in the world, played on Wednesday until almost midnight at the Karl Marx Theater for an audience that gave him a long standing ovation so that he would continue playing.
The audience clapped along when he played Cuban rhythms and enjoyed the beat of the cajon as well as music from Buenos Aires, with accompaniment provided by harmonica player Antonio Serrano.
Lucia and his group offered a little bit of everything: a fusion of tango, jazz, son montuno, pure and mixed flamenco and even a “tablao,” where flamenco dancer Antonio Fernandez, known as Farru, seemed to be playing another instrument with his shoes.
In the opinion of Cuban composer Leo Brower, Paco de Lucia is a genius who transformed flamenco without losing its tradition or magic, and improving its quality.
As part of his first visit to Cuba in 26 years, Paco de Lucia’s concert was featured in the Leo Brouwer Chamber Music Festival, which runs until Oct. 13.
