Cuban Unions Discuss Main Document of Workers Congress

HAVANA, Oct, 18 – All Cuban unions will discuss, from October 25 to December 10 the main report to the 20th Congress of the Cuban Workers Confederation (CTC) in what has been scheduled the last preparatory stage before the national event.

The president of the congress organizing committee Ulises Guilarte told Granma newspaper that the event will take place amidst the ongoing update of Cuban economy.

The Document entitled dedicates four chapters to address weaknesses and inefficiencies that limit the performance, the capacity of mobilization and organization of the unions. It also identifies ways and means to improve the role of the workers organizations as it leaves space for the workers to speak their minds about what must be changed in the unions’ performance.

The text suggests the update of tasks and activities that have traditionally marked the life and work of the unions, such as the role of workers assemblies and daily activities towards meeting their goals. Guilarte said that the quallity of such tasks must be raised in order to promote and make use of productive potential and efficiency in different workers’ collectives and to increasingly fight indiscipline and illegalities, as well as to discuss issues, such as payment systems, working conditions, the workers’ health, among others.

The unionist said that the document has a conceptual structure aimed at achieving the kind of unions Cuban workers really want to have, with higher authority, influence and acknowledgement. The report will also be analyzed by Parliament deputies in November.
