Astana, Oct 22 – The Cuban Lazaro Alvarez and Julio Cesar La Cruz, current global champions in their respective divisions, showed themselves to be the favorites, with wins today at the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Championships, based in Almaty, Kazakhstan.Alvarez, also bronze medalist at the London-2012 Olympic Games in the 60 kg category, defeated 3-0 (29-28 twice, and 30-27) the second-seeded Uzbek Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, eliminating him from the quarter-finals at both the Baku-2011 and the Olympics 2012.
La Cruz (81 kg), did the same, a little more convincingly (30-26, 29-27 and 30-27) against the Ukrainian Oleksandr Ganzulia.
However, Cuba’s boxer in the over 91 kg, Yoandi Toirac, fell 0-3 (triple 28-29) against the Russian Magomed Omarov.
Latin America scored additional wins today through the Brazilian Robson Conceicao, Pan American silver medalist at Guadalajara-2011 and fourth seed in 60 kg, 3-0 against the Ukrainian Dmytro Cherniakrazilian.
