Madrid, Nov 20  – Barcelona forward Lionel Messi won a record third Golden Boot today for having scored the most goals in Europe’s domestic leagues last season.

The star soccer player became the first player to achieve three such awards, this time thanks to the 46 goals he scored in 32 games of the Championship League last season.

He was presented the award by former Barcelona star Hristo Stoichkov of Bulgaria, who had won the same award himself in the 1989-1990 season, shared that year with the Mexican Hugo Sanchez.

Messi, 26, received the award in the city of Condal, while he is recovering from an injury, a muscle tear in his left leg which will keep him off the field for more than a month.

Several teammates, including Cesc Fabregas, Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol, along with club president Sandro Rosell were also in attendance.
