Havana, Nov 30 – Cuba guarantees comprehensive medical care to all patients suffering from Acquired Immune Deficiency Sindrome (AIDS), including antiretroviral drugs and social and psychological support, said Maria Lantero, head of the Cuban Public Health Ministry’s Sexually- Transmitted Infections Department.
Lantero, a specilalist in Epidemiology, told the press that work focuses on the link with the community of people with AIDS who take part in the design and implementation of best practices to guarantee good adhesion to the treatment and improve their quality of life.
The sexually-transmitted diseases and AIDS are part of Cuba’s public health system.
Regarding the AIDS, each year, more than 1,500 cases are diagnosed (nearly 80 percent between 15 and 19 years old), 8 out of 10 are men, 9 of 10 are men who have sex with other men.
The use of a condom is advised, as a tool for the prevention of AIDS, with actions to give instructions on how to use it.
Lantero said there is a nationwide network to guarantee tests and the right treatme.
