Havana, Dec 6  –  President Raul Castro expressed here to his South African peer Jacob Zuma his deepest sorrow for the death of Nelson Mandela, to whom he described as dear comrade.

On behalf of the Cuban people and government, Raul Castro extended his condolences to the relatives of the leader, the African National Congress, and the whole nation.

Mandela will be remembered for his example, greatness of his work, and firmness of his convictions in fighting the apartheid regime, and his invaluable contribution to the construction of a new South Africa.

Nelson Mandela, who was the first South African president democratically elected on May 19, 1994, died at the age of 95 in his Johannesburg residence.

We profess him a deep respect and admiration, not only for what he did for his people, but also for his proved friendship towards our country, the Cuban president stated.

We will never speak of Mandela in the past tense, he added.
