Havana, Jan 9 – The Ministry of the Interior (MININT by its Spanish acronym) issued the following briefing note about the capture of the assailants of Cuban national boxing team members Julio Cesar la Cruz and Lenier Pero.
As it was reported in the early hours of January 4, two athletes of the national boxing team, Julio Cesar la Cruz Peraza and Lenier Pero Justiz suffered a firearm assault when leaving a recreational center located south of Camagüey city.
To clarify this incident a team made up by specialized MININT forces was formed, who established the circumstances in which the incident occurred and arrested its two authors: Freidys Felix Arias Matos, previously convicted for robbery with violence, who was on probation since August 2013, and Kelvis Lázaro Ballester Guerrero, with a criminal record for cattle theft and slaughter.
They both confessed the crime made for financial gain, and at the time of the assault they were unaware of their victims’ identity. The gun they used was also occupied.
Promptness in clarifying this case reaffirms the will of the revolutionary government and its authorities of resolutely confronting such acts that threaten the peace of our people.
