Canberra, 18 Jan – The world No 1 player Rafael Nadal produced a masterclass to reach the fourth round and a showdown with Kei Nishikori.
Nadal was sublime in demolishing Monfils who, despite the scoreline, played some of his best tennis in Melbourne.
Monfils had hoped it would remain scorching hot to give him a chance against Nadal but in temperatures around the mid 20s, the Frenchman struggled to get a look at even a break-point opening let alone getting anywhere close to taking a set off the former champion.
A series of double-faults did not help Monfils’s cause either as Nadal was also gifted too many points, but it shouldn’t take anything away from a near-perfect display from the Spaniard.
