Havana, Apr 5 – Cuba’s team Domadores (Tamers) took an important step towards the semifinals of the Worlkd Series of Boxing yesterday night by defeating the US team Knockouts in the five fights.
Cuba was already leading 1-0 Thursday because Puerto Rican Jantony Ortiz had lost in the weighing. He was supposed to fight against his Cuban rival Gerardo Cervantes in the 52 kg category.
The first win was pocketed by world champion Lazaro Alvarez (56kg), who defeated by unanimous voting the Venezuelan Luis Arcon.
Another gighlight of the event was the fight between Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre and Cuban Roniel Iglesias, who won by knockout in the third round.
Cuban Emilio Correa (81 kg), a runner-up in Beijing 2008, also defeated by unanimous voting Brazilian Michel Borges de Souza.
Cuban boxer Yoandy Toirac, in 91 kg, also won by unanimopus voting against Swedish Mohamed Sallah.
The two teams will fight each other again in the remaining five divisions on April 12 in Salem, New Hampshire, in the United States, to try win a place for the semifinals.
