Cuba, may 9 – Cuban Grand Master Leinier Domínguez will face today Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk in the first day of the Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament Elite group in its venue at the Habana Riviera Hotel.
Leinier, leader of the classification with 2 768 Elo points, will have a tough rival in Ivanchuk (2753), winner of this tourney six times before, who returns after missing last year.
Cuban Lazaro Bruzón (2682) will fight against the Philippine Wesley So (2731) and the defending champion Hungarian Zoltan Almasi (2693) shall have the Spanish Francisco Vallejo (2700) as opponent.
The opening ceremony hosted by the International Saloon allowed confirming that this group, made up by six Grand Masters, has category 19 and average Elo of 2 721 units, with the Asian as the only newcomer.
In the Premier 1st the former Cuban nation al champion Yuniesky Quesada (2642) tops the ranking and shall take white pieces against the Peruvian Emilio Cordova (2616), who follows him in the rankings.
The also Cuban Carlos Hevia (2530) will face the Italian Danyyl Dvirnyy (2560) and the Canadian Bator Sambuev (2562) shall rival the host Yusnel Bacallao (2522).
In addition to that roster, made up by six Cubans and four visitors, the event includes other two open groups totaling over 100 contestants.
