World leaders express solidarity with Peru

Lima, Mar 21st – World leaders have expressed solidarity and sent condolences to the Peruvian people and President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski given the human and material losses suffered as a result of natural disasters in this South American nation.

Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers, sent a message yesterday, March 20, Prensa Latina reports.

“I have learned of the human and material damage caused by the torrential rains which Peru has suffered. Accept my sincere condolences, which I extend to the Peruvian people and families of the victims,” he wrote, according to PL.

The Cuban embassy in Peru communicated to the country’s Foreign Ministry that the mission is ready and willing to immediately transmit any request for aid by the government.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodríguez stated that the Bolivarian government, holding the presidency pro tempore of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) can coordinate the delivery of humanitarian aid for flood victims with authorities in Peru, in conjunction with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), as well.

Bolivian President Evo Morañes also sent a letter to his Peruvian counterpart, stating, “The Bolivian state and people express to you all our solidarity given the pain and loss of human lives caused by natural disasters in different regions of your homeland.”

Peru has suffered heavy rainfall which, thus far this year, has caused rivers to overflow, landslides, and flooding, leaving 75 dead, 11 missing, and more than 70,000 homeless, with close to 300,000 persons affected.

The number of home destroyed has reached 7,974, while 1,231 kilometers of roads are ruined, in addition to at least 19 schools collapsed.(Granma)
