Cuba, May 3rd – The world bronze medalist and member of the Astana Women’s Team, Arlenis Sierra, leads the Cuban cycling team that will compete in the Pan American Road Championship scheduled for May 4 to 7 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Sierra, bronze medalist in the points race event in the London 2016 World Cup and multi Pan American champion, was called to the Cuban roster for the contest after successfully debuting this season with the Italian-Kazakh club, one of the greats of the professional circuit.
After outstanding results since her youth, Sierra, 24, also won the Tour of Costa Rica and the Tour de Bretagne, in France.
She also ranked second in the Pan American Championship of Venezuela and third in the strong Tour de San Luis, in Argentina, and when finishing 28th in Rio 2016 road event, she improved Cuba´s best performance in Olympics, dating from Sydney 2000, when Dania Perez ranked 46th.
Her performance aroused the interest of the famous Astana, club in which she already achieved her first successes by winning the Italian Gold Trophy, and ranking second in the Valencian Cycling Week, in Spain, where she won a stage.
The Cuban team to the Pan American tournament also includes Marlies Mejias (Weber Shimano Ladies Power), who will compete on the road and time trial events.
Mejías, who is also 24, treasures a silver medal at the Mexico 2014 World Cup in the omnium event, more than a dozen titles at Central and Pan American level, as well as the crowns in the Tour de Uruguay and in the 2nd Titan Tropic of Mountain Bike, in Cuba.(Radio Rebelde)
