Cuba, May 31 – Cuba is member of the International Organizing Committee of the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students Sochi-2017, elected at the third international preparatory meeting, held from May 25 to 27 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The good news adds to another one even better on the decision to dedicate the great youth event to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, in recognition to his imperishable example and legacy and decisive contribution to the preservation of the movement of the festivals and the defense of their founding principles.
Cuban José Angel Maury, secretary general of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), said the unanimous agreement was reached with the support of anti-imperialist and progressive youth represented on that meeting.
Maury added that in Sri Lanka the list of workshops and seminars that will be part of the Festival program was completed in addition to the documents related to the following steps of the preparatory process for the youth forum, to be held in Sochi, Russia, from October 15 to 21.
The event will mark the centenary of the triumph of the Great October Socialist Revolution and the anniversaries 70th of the festival movement and 60th of the celebration of the sixth edition of these meetings in Moscow, then capital of the Soviet Union, in 1957.
In addition to Fidel Castro, this Festival will be dedicated to two other important figures: Commander Ernesto Che Guevara, on the 50th anniversary of his fall in combat in Bolivia, and Mohamed Abdelaziz, who recently died and devoted his life to the struggle against colonialism and the independence of Western Sahara.(acn)
