Havana, Jun 5th – To remember the importance of preserving the environment for human development is the objective of this day, which is celebrated throughout the world with actions aimed to make the international community more sensitive to this matter.
The environment can be broadly defined as the whole system that serves and conditions every form of life in a society; It includes natural and artificial elements that are or can be modified by human action.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, coinciding with the first global summit on the environment. Currently the day is celebrated every June 5 in more than 100 countries.
Talks in student facilities, children’s festivals, sports activities and a day of environmental sanitation are among the actions to celebrate World Environment Day in Cuba.
In addition, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) – together with other entities and organizations – organizes the XI International Convention on Environment and Development to be held from July 3 to 7 at the Palace Of Conventions in Havana.
According to the organizers, the event will promote cooperation among countries, exchange of experiences and sustainable practices and knowledge transfer, as well as sustained and inclusive economic growth, social participatory development, environmental protection and dignity of mankind.(Prensa Latina)
