Las Tunas, Aug 28 – We must think of agriculture not only as a source of food for the people, but also as key to strengthening the economy, increasing exports, and substituting imports, stated José Ramón Machado Ventura, second Party secretary and a vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers, on a visit to this eastern province.

During a tour of the principal production centers here, Machado Ventura was able to confirm progress and note initiatives taken to concentrate resources and make optimal use of water available

La Palma in Majibacoa; El Trompo-Las Tapas in Jesús Menéndez; Dumañuecos in Manatí; and Melanio Ortiz in Jobabo were some of the agricultural areas he visited. In the last of these, he attended the inauguration of a business center at a local bank, a seed store, a machinery workshop, and other new sites indicative of efforts to improve the lives of farmers and their families in rural towns.

In all of the municipalities, Machado emphasized the importance of irrigation as key to successful harvests, noting that ,given the prolonged drought which has hit the country, the future of agriculture depends of efficient use of water.

He was also able to confirm progress in the recovery of the cattle and dairy industries during a visit to the Maniabo basic unit of cooperative production.
