Cuban Artists Miguel Barnet, Eliades Ochoa Win in Latin Awards Canada

Havana, Oct 3rd – Poet and ethnologist Miguel Barnet and musician Eliades Ochoa are the first Cubans to receive the Latin Award Canada, a prize they say ”is a recognition to Cuban culture,” both artists told Prensa Latina Tuesday.

The two artists had travelled to the city of Montreal to receive the lauro, which in its fourth edition recognizes artists with outstanding contributions to Hispanic culture in that northern nation and the rest of the world.

‘I feel very proud and surprised by this award which recognizes so many years of work dedicated to Cuban culture,’ said Barnet, who thanked the Montreal authorities and those in charge of the award for their support.

The poet and ethnologist has a double celebration, as on his return he was received with the news that his album The Poet on the Island was recognized with a Special Cubadisco Award 2018.

For his part, Ochoa, one of the founders of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, thanked the award because in his case ‘it is a tribute to the Cuban music of so many years, more than 50 dedicated to traditional music,’ he told Prensa Latina exclusively.

In Montreal, he recalled, we received a lot of respect and affection, and the awards gala was the best show, because ‘I closed the show accompanied by Latin musicians living there who know my repertoire to perfection, and the audience enjoyed songs like El carretero (‘The Carrier’), Píntate los labios María (‘Paint Your Lips’) and El cuarto de Tula (‘The Room of Tula’), among others.

Those, he said, are important moments for an artist, they give strength, knowing that one’s work reaches people. ‘Prizes like this are the ones I like to take to Cuba,’ he concluded.
