Russia Terms Renewed US Hostility against Cuba as Cynical

Russia, June 7th – Russia still holds its principled stance on strongly opposing any unilateral sanctions outside the international law requirements and, in this regard, terms the reinforcement of the US blockade against Cuba as cynical.

Washington´s latest punitive measures are the continued old policy of trying to choke the Cuban economy, Alexander Schetinin, head of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Prensa Latina.

The high-ranking official referred to US President Donald Trump´s bans for cruises, yachts and private jets to travel to Cuba, as well as the people-to-people category, among other sanctions.

But, in addition, it is a cynical policy because it goes against welfare and economic situation of the Cuban people, the Russian diplomat stated after participating in a round table on Latin America, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

At the same time, it is obvious that such sanctions have a great political purpose, though we know that Cuba’s stance is quite firm in relation to its sovereignty protection, its right to live freely and to choose the appropriate political development, Schetinin uttered.

We are going to continue our cooperation with Cuba, according to the Russian politician who shared a working breakfast on relations between Latin America and the Eurasian Economic Union, made up of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

I would like to highlight the great importance of the intergovernmental agreements to be signed during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, firstly with regard to cooperation with the Cuban railway renewal.

The working breakfast was attended by businessmen and statesmen from Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay, Guatemala, Antigua and Barbuda and other Caribbean nations.

The Cuban delegation is headed by the Vice President of the Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas, who met the President of the Russian Senate Valentina Matvienko on Thursday.(Prensa Latina)
