Camagüey, June 8th – Authorities confirmed the presence of the giant African snail in this city, after the completion of the corresponding examinations, and began the implementation of the provided plan to destroy it and to prevent its proliferation.
The M.Sc. Roxana García Domínguez, director of the Provincial Management Center for Disaster Risk Reduction, explained to Radio Cadena Agramonte that so far only that species has been identified in some homes in Palmira, Callejón del León and San Cayetano streets, of the Torre Blanca neighborhood, in the capital of Camagüey.
So far, more than 300 specimens have been collected in several stages of growing, after the investigation of some 600 houses in three blocks near the initial focus.
The specialist said that after the investigation has not detected the mollusk in other areas, but increased surveillance by a multidisciplinary group, which undertakes actions such as training of specialists and managers, and daily monitoring together with the Civil Defense.
Sanitary hearings are also held in the neighborhoods and educational centers to increase awareness of the population, so that they are aware of the risks of this organism, which affects hundreds of plant species and causes serious illnesses in people, such as meningitis and intestinal disorders, if you have contact with him.
Among the measures that are oriented, the experts emphasize the non-manipulation without protection, like gloves; frequent washing of the hands, especially in case of contact, as well as fruits and vegetables, and it is recommended to drink the water with the corresponding treatments established by Public Health.
Special attention should be given to children, with greater possibilities of contact, hence the responsibility of the family, which in turn has to maximize the cleanliness in courtyards and avoid the accumulation of solid waste, because in those circumstances is where the snail is most detected.
García Domínguez said that knowledge about the giant African snail, which can measure up to 20 centimeters long and ten wide, with longitudinal bands of light and dark colors, it has bright and colorful shades, and it is mainly located on plants and walls. , in decomposing elements and humid and shaded places.
Specialists insists in the importance of avoiding direct contact with the mollusk, to maintain strict surveillance and in the case of detecting its presence, will be immediately reported to the Centers for Risk Reduction of the Municipal Assemblies of the People’s Power, or to the provincial level, in addition to the Directorates of Plant Health and other competent authorities.
