Caracas, March 4  — Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets of Caracas on Sunday to show support for President Hugo Chavez and the Bolivarian revolutionary government he heads.

Dressed mostly in red and carrying signs with slogans like “I am Chavez” and “Youth with Chavez”, the young supporters of Chavez began their demonstrations during the early hours of Sunday.

The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) said on its website that the march was a “representation of the young patriot” and advocate for “national unity and full governance that our country now enjoys” to support the ailing president.

In statements to the national TV broadcaster VTV, one of the participants said: “Chavez’s young people expressed themselves in a mobilization in defense of the revolution and support for Commander Chavez and Vice President Nicolas Maduro.”

Sunday’s demonstration showed that Venezuelans will not stand aside as “there is a committed youth, who are clear of the historical moment we are living, and ready to stop any attempt of destabilization,” said the PSUV.

Meanwhile, anti-Chavez youth also marched through Caracas Sunday to demand that Maduro show evidence that Chavez can govern the country, saying that they will continue their protest until they know the truth.

Ever since Chavez’s return to Venezuela, after seeking medical treatment in Cuba, the Venezuelan opposition has called for the president to appear in public or resign, if he can not continue to rule. The government, which insists that Chavez is still in charge, accuses the opposition of spreading false rumors and trying to “destabilize” the country, taking advantage of the president’s illness.
